EV Conversions:

The Electric Land Rover

The Electric Defender

The first of many conversions came in the form of my 1993 Defender 110 ex-MOD which we brought stateside in 2019. We swapped the gas guzzling engine out for a 2018 Nissan Leaf SV with a 40kWh battery pack and a 147hp 236 pound-feet of torque motor. However, we couldn’t part with the joy of actually driving so we ditched the Nissan automatic and kept the 5-speed manual.

The Build

Vehicle Specs:

40 kWh Battery

70 Miles HWY / 100 City

147 Horsepower

236 FT/IBS Torque

Driving a Classic EV:

“WOW, electric propulsion is incredible — gone are the traditional, conventional, hp and torque curves. Hello, instant torque from 0 rpm.”

The Build Process

Step 1: Remove the Old

All the oily, conventional propulsion bits are shed! Gone are the engine, exhaust, gas tank and fuel fill and distribution bits.

Step 2: Design

Break out the 3D scanner, measuring tape and calipers. Modern day tech allows all the fitment tests to be done at the click of a button, saving time and money.

Step 3: Execute

Turning CAD into reality and a whole bunch of wiring, this is the longest but most fun aspect of the conversion process. Especially for the first turn of the key and the silence that follows.
